2 Benefits of Learning the Piano

There are many benefits to learning how to play the piano (or any instrument) but today we are going to specifically look at two ways piano lessons boost our mind.

1- Playing the piano teaches DISCIPLINE. Playing an instrument may look easy but LEARNING how to play the instrument takes a lot of time and dedication. You have to train your fingers to move a certain way and create all sorts of muscle-memory in them. (That's why we play scales and chords over and over and over again so our fingers don't forget.) It's easy to sit at the piano and play what you want to play but it takes discipline to sit at a piano and work out the hard stuff. The key is to practice until it BECOMES easy. Because at some point the scales or the song or whatever you are working on becomes easy. You don't have to stress over hitting all those F#'s or Bb's or keeping your fingers even. You just play and it is FUN. It makes you smile and brings you happiness. Then you get to show it off to anyone and everyone (which you totally should). So once you've worked out the hard stuff you feel so good! You can now play something you couldn't before and that takes us into our next benefit:

2- Playing the piano teaches CONFIDENCE. When you take the time to practice and work out a hard spot you start to see results. All of a sudden you look back on this hard piece that has taken a lot of time and you can play it. And it's fun. And you feel amazing. Because YOU did it. No one can play an instrument for you. And that feeling of knowing you accomplished something, that you learned something hard but you did it anyway, well it is pretty amazing. At this moment you should feel proud. Always remember, MUSIC IS TO BE ENJOYED.

If you've been thinking about learning the piano we invite you to start now. There are SO many benefits to learning an instrument: discipline, confidence, problem solving, reducing stress, improving vocabulary, keeping us young (seriously, there are new studies that are showing that music slows down the aging process), and the list goes on and on! So do it. Plus it's a lot of fun. ;)
